Genola McKinnie

August 17, 1925 ~ March 3, 2022 (age 96)

Genola Marietta Lake McKinnie, 96, passed away in Landover, Maryland on Thursday March 3, 2022.  

She was born on August 17, 1925 in Hardeman County to the late Chester Homer Lake and Millie Ann Lockett Lake.

Her funeral service was held on Saturday March 19, 2022 at 12:00 noon at Mt. Salem MB Church with Reverend Melvin Bufford in charge.  Burial was in the Lake Cemetery and Dixie Funeral Home www.dixiefuneralhome.com was in charge of the professionals service.  

She was educated in the Hardeman County public schools and later attended DuSable High School (Chicago, IL).  She was athletic and played basketball and ran track.

She was a "Woman of God" and grew up attended several churches in the community but her home church was Mt. Salem. She was proud to tell people that she was baptized in Spring Creek.     

She was married to the late Jesse William McKinnie and they were married over forty-two years until his death.  They were the parents of nine children of which six preceded her in death.  

She was known as the family historian.  She was a quilt maker, writer, song writer and storyteller.  

The last five years of her life she lived with her son Donald and his wife, Karen.  She attended Fourth Street Friendship Seventh-Day Adventist Church with them.  

Preceding her in death were her parents and husband; six children, Joe, Rose Etta, Norris, Cora Ann, Clifford and Brenda.  

She leaves to cherish her memory her children, Jesse (Alice), Donald (Karen), and Charles; many other relatives and friends that will truly miss her.
