This little baby boy, Marvin Shaw, would come to be a very well respected leader with a quiet and humble spirit. He would gain the respect of all who were privileged to come into his presence.
Marvin professed his hope in Christ at an early age and was baptized at Traveler’s Rest Church in Laconia, Tennessee. He later joined Antioch Baptist Church in Whiteville, Tennessee where he served in the Christian Education Department as a Sunday School teacher. His interest in studying and learning the word of God was evidenced through his faithfulness as a bible study student.
Marvin attended Hardeman County public schools and graduated from Bolivar Central High School with the Class of 1976. As a high school student, basketball was his passion.
He sustained his interest in sports as a high school and collegiate referee with the West Tennessee Basketball Officials Association (WTBOA) for over 30 years. He continued his formal education and graduated in 1980 from Lane College where he became a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated. Upon graduation, his career began with the State of Tennessee at Nat T. Winston Developmental Center, Arlington Developmental Center, and then Western Mental Health Institute. He retired from Western in January of 2020 as Adjunctive Therapy Department Director. Marvin was a member of Silver Star Masonic Lodge #97 of Whiteville, Tennessee and an active member Phi Beta Sigma, Nu Iota Sigma Chapter of Bolivar, Tennessee.
After thirteen years of friendship and dating, Marvin united in holy matrimony with Carolyn Linette Perry December 27, 1986. They were blessed to celebrate 33 years of marriage. Marvin and Carolyn demonstrated togetherness to the community as they supported each other through sickness and health. They celebrated together with family and friends, prayed together and worshipped together. His beloved wife transitioned on November 11, 2020.
