Reverend Roscoe Charles Gudger, Sr.
August 11, 1943 ~ June 25, 2022 (age 78)
Roscoe was born August 11, 1943 to Rachel Gudger who passed away when he was a toddler. He was then taken in and raised by his grandparents, Tom and Louise Newborn Gudger.
Pastor Gudger passed away Saturday, June 25, 2022 at Jackson General Hospital in Jackson, TN.
His funeral service was on Saturday July 2, 2022 at 2:00 pm at God's House of Promise with Pastor Roscoe Gudger, Jr. in charge. Burial was in the West Tn Veteran's cemetery and Dixie Funeral Home www.dixiefuneralhome.com was in charge of the professional service.
He began his journey in life by attending the segregated schools of Somerville TN, graduating from Fayette County Training High School in 1964.
After graduation he enlisted in the United States Army June 23,1964 serving until May 13, 1967, where he obtained a Honorable Discharge.
After his Honorable Discharge from the US Army he was employed at numerous jobs both part-time and full-time in the public workforce including being a recruiter for the TN Army National Guard. He retired from ThyssenKrupp (formerly Dover) Elevators in 2005.
Stemming from one of his occupations as a technician with Sears, which was one of the top electronic companies in the area, he began and was a successful entrepreneur as a television repairman for over 30 years. Being a television repairman caused him to be well known and respected in Hardeman County as well as counties throughout West TN.
While employed in the public workforce, he also enlisted in the TN Army National Guard in 1970; serving 23 years in which he retired with full benefits in 1993 as an E7/Sergeant First Class.
He was a member of Lane Chapel C.M.E. Church in Whiteville TN where he served as a Sunday School teacher, worship leader and Chairman of the Steward Board. Lane Chapel is where he began his ministry as a pastor under the tutelage of Pastor William Blakely. He was a full-time pastor for the Christian Methodist Episcopal denomination where he was ordained as pastor in 1987 and admitted to the West Tennessee Annual Conference. During his time as Pastor, he pastored numerous local churches in the Northwest District until his retirement in 2012.
After his retirement as a local Pastor, he returned to Lane Chapel C.M.E. Church in Whiteville where he served, preached the gospel, and he also was the Servant Leader with Pastor Mary Edwards until his death.
He had many successful endeavors in life but his most successful and treasured one was his marriage to his wife Carrie Bufford of 57 years whom he leaves to mourn his death. There were four children born from their union in marriage. Nahada (Eunice) who preceded him in death. Roscoe, Jr. (Benetta), Sherece Williams (Larry), and Joaquina Burruss (Pierre) along with his10 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren who are also left to mourn. He also leaves to mourn his death 3 brothers-in-law, (L.C. Bufford, Edward Bufford and Cornelius McElroy). 6 sisters-in-law (Leola McElroy, Getrude Giles, Deborah Bufford, Billie Jean Bufford, Sadie Bufford, Lola Bufford and Elizabeth Bufford).
He also leaves to mourn, a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins from both the Bufford and Newborn families.
