Ruby Lee Montgomery was born November 13, 1928, in Fayette County, Tennessee.  She was the oldest of seven children born to Mr. Leroy Montgomery and Mrs. Laura Brown Montgomery.  She departed this life on Thursday, January 28, 2021.

Her funeral service was held on Wednesday February 3, 2021 at 11:00 am at the Jerome Boyd Chapel at Dixie Funeral Home with burial in the Antioch MB Cemetery and Dixie Funeral Home www.dixiefuneralhome.com in charge of the professional service.

At the young age of 16, she met the love of her life, Mr. Vernon Lee Spencer, in Somerville, TN.  They were married in Ashland, MS on September 19, 1948.  This union was blessed with five children.

She united with the Antioch Baptist Church in Whiteville, TN, where she served in the Ushers’ Ministry, doing church announcements, and was a member of the Seniors Ministry/Seniors Choir.

Ruby retired from the State of Tennessee – Western Mental Health Institute where she worked as a psychiatric technician.  She was also active in her community and was a member of several organizations:  the Hardeman County Branch of the NAACP; Independent Society #3; Sunflower #222 Order of the Eastern Star; and the Bolivar Senior Center.

She was preceded in death by four siblings:  Leroy Montgomery, Jr., Eddie Montgomery, Johnnie Montgomery, and Ida Mae Upchurch; one sister-in-law, Mary Montgomery; one brother-in-law, Bill Upchurch; one son-in-law, Michael Gorie; and one son, Ralph Spencer.

Cherishing memories of Ruby are her husband of 72 years, Vernon Lee Spencer of Bolivar, TN; four children, Oreatha (Guy) Stennis of Omaha, NE; Doris Gorie of Baltimore, MD; James (Nelda) Spencer of Whiteville, TN; and Eunice Spencer of Whiteville, TN; one daughter-in-law, Ramona Spencer of Middleton, TN; one brother, George (Mildred) Montgomery of Baltimore, MD; one sister, Lauretta (Edwin) Brooks of Baltimore, MD; three sisters-in-law, Rosetta Montgomery of Baltimore, MD; Cassandra Montgomery of Baltimore, MD; and Neola Sardon of Jackson, TN; seven grandchildren, Flasco Terrell Spencer, Telly Marva Selmer, Kameka Shanell Keith, Cherissa Rene Spencer, Jessica Nicole Spencer, Jamie JaVon Spencer and Nicholas Jamal Spencer; and a host of great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
