Shirley Mathews Obituary

Shirley Jean Mathews

September 20, 1957 ~ December 28, 2020 (age 63)

On September 17th, 1957, a baby girl was born to Mr. Leaster Newble and Miss Gladys Mathews, and they named her Shirley Jean Mathews.

Her funeral service was held on Saturday January 2, 2021 at 1:00 pm at the Simon Chapel MB Church Cemetery  with Pastor Jeffrey Bledsoe in charge and Dixie Funeral Home www.dixiefuneralhome.com was in charge of the professional service.

She grew up in Whiteville, TN and her spiritual journey began at Simon Chapel M. B. Church. Shirley remained a faithful, lifelong member; serving wherever needed, she was President of the usher board, and cleaned the church in previous years.

Shirley’s transition came on Monday, December 28th, 2020. Her parents; Gladys Mathews Mosley and Leaster Newble; two brothers: Leaster Jr. &John Mosley; paternal grandparents, LeAnder &Flora Mae Newble; maternal grandparents, Susie Simmons & Lander Mathews; three
brothers-in-law: Michael, Ned , and Walter Joy III preceded her in death.

Shirley was educated in the public schools of Hardeman County, TN. She graduated in 1976 from Bolivar Central High School.

Shirley was an employee of Master Apparel of Somerville, TN.

After it closed she began working at Lucerne of Bolivar, TN.

After Lucerne ceased its business, Shirley became an entrepreneur providing healthcare sitter service until physical health challenges cause her to retire.
Her true qualities of giving, loving, cooking and being present, caused the paths of Mr. Charlie Joy and Miss Shirley Mathews to cross and they ‘tied the knot’ on August 10, 2003. This union extended her family to include: a father & mother-in-law, Mr. Walter Sr. & Ms. Liller Joy; sister-in-law, Ms. Patricia (David) Perry; five brothers-inlaw: Mr. Othalee Joy, Mr. Eddie (Peggy) Joy, Mr. Avery (Tilmer) Joy, Mr. Worley Joy, Mr. Walter III. (Robert Mae) Joy.

Those who will cherish fond memories of Shirley are: her three daughters: Ms. Gladys Mathews, Mrs. Sandra (Antonio) Harvey, Ms. Tiffany Robertson; her husband: Mr. Charlie R. Joy; a stepson, Mr. Charlie C. Joy ; 10 grandchildren, two that she raised as her own: Mr. Cornelius (Shandrika) Mathews and Mr. Alkeem Mathews; 8 great grandchildren; six brothers: Mr. Jimmie Sr. (Charlotte) Mathews, Mr. Thomas (Nadine) Mathews, Mr. Ray Charles Mosley, Mr. Rafus (Angela) Mosley, Mr. J.C. (Naketta) Mosley, Mr. Fayzell Mosley; two sisters: Sharon Deloris Newble, Dwyna Carl Lake; an uncle, Mr. Jessie Simmons; an aunt, Mrs. Ora Jean Newble Jones; her best friends: Mrs. Peggy Shaw, Mrs. Patricia Tiller, Mrs. Mae Prewitt, Mrs. Margaret J.
