95 Years Old

Vernon Spencer, 95, of Bolivar passed away on Saturday November 2, 2024.  He was born on November 15, 1928 to the late Willie (Dim) Spencer and Susie Rivers Spencer.

His funeral service was held on Sunday November 10, 2024 at 2:00 pm at Antioch MB Church with Reverend Jermaine Shaw in charge.  Burial was in the spencer Cemetery and Dixie Funeral Home www.dixiefuneralhome.com was in charge of the professional service.

He was married to the late Ruby Lee Montgomery Spencer.  They were married in Ashland, MS on September 19, 1948.

He was a lifetime member of Antioch MB Church where he served on the Deacon and Senior Ministry.   

He was affiliated with many organizations including the Hardeman County Branch of the NAACP, Trojan Lodge #280, Sunflower #222 Order of the Eastern Star and Independent Society #3.  

He was a participant in the Fayette County Civil rights Movement and after several attempts to register to vote he was successful in 1960.  At that time he was told to leave the home where he was living along with his wife and five children.  He relocated to Hardeman County where he worked for the Armira Corporation until he retired in 1983.  He became a landowner and was a farmer.  He loved to cook, laugh and tell jokes.  

Preceding him in death were his parents, wife and one son, Ralph Spencer.  

He leaves to cherish his memory his sister, Neola Sardon; his children, Oreatha (Guy) Stennis, Doris (Michael) Spencer-Gorie, CSM James E. [US Army Retired] (Nelda) Spencer and  Eunice Spencer; several grand children, great and great-grandchildren and many other relatives and friends that will truly miss him.
